Hello Captains, and welcome back!
A few months ago, I shared that I had finally caved and picked up the iFly 737 MAX 8. Like many of you, I was excited to add a new aircraft to my virtual hangar. But unlike previous purchases, this one didn’t immediately win me over. After a few initial flights, I parked her and moved on to other aircraft. The excitement faded quickly as I began to notice her shortcomings.
Then came an update—one I downloaded promptly but never tested. The MAX 8 remained grounded while I flew other favorites. I’ll admit, I was feeling a bit of buyer’s remorse.
This was all before FSExpo, and just ahead of that event, PMDG broke their silence with news that they still plan to release their own 737 MAX 8. No timeline, of course, but the announcement was enough to stir curiosity. Would I jump ship again, just like I did back in 2011?
Back then, iFly released their 737 NG just weeks before PMDG’s version hit the market. I flew the iFly extensively—until PMDG dropped theirs. I switched instantly and never looked back. That memory still lingers.
But let’s fast forward to a recent Saturday morning. While browsing YouTube, I stumbled upon a video praising the latest iFly MAX update. Intrigued, I dusted off the aircraft and took her for a spin from DFW to MEM.
WOW. Just WOW. What a transformation.
The update has dramatically improved the flight experience. She handles beautifully now—smooth, responsive, and far more immersive. My opinion of the aircraft has shifted significantly.
That said, there’s still one major gripe: the EFB/Tablet. Compared to the intuitive interface of the Fenix EFB, iFly’s version feels clunky and unintuitive. Hopefully, future updates will address this, because it’s the one area that still breaks immersion for me.
So, the million-dollar question: Would I buy the PMDG 737 MAX 8 if it were released today?
A few weeks ago, my answer would’ve been a resounding YES. But now? I’m not so sure. The iFly MAX has earned its place in my rotation, and I’m genuinely enjoying flying it. Of course, I reserve the right to change my mind—this hobby has taught me to never say never.
But for now, I’m content. And that’s something I didn’t expect.
