Hello Captains, and welcome back.
One of the most common questions I get is: “Which GPU driver version are you running, and have you had any issues with it?” Fair question. My philosophy has always leaned toward “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Back in my Prepar3D days, I’d often hold off on updates—whether it was the sim itself or the latest Nvidia driver—preferring stability over chasing the newest release.
But with MSFS, things are a bit different. Updates happen whether we like it or not, and that’s changed how I approach GPU drivers. Since transitioning fully to MSFS 2020 and now 2024, I’ve become more open to Nvidia updates. I don’t install every single one, but I do tend to update every few months—especially when a new Sim Update (SU) drops.
That said, I never update blindly. I follow a documented process each time I install a new GPU driver or apply an SU. For example, just before Microsoft released SU3 for MSFS 2024, Nvidia rolled out driver version 581.08. After installing SU3, I performed a clean install of the new driver—a method I always use to ensure the previous version is fully removed before the new one goes in.
Now, I’ve seen plenty of reports from simmers who update their GPU drivers, run into issues, and then roll back to the previous version. I’ve been there too. But often, poor performance after a driver update isn’t just about the driver—it’s about the system. Clearing MSFS cache files and deleting shader folders can make a huge difference in how well your sim runs post-update.
A few years ago, I created a step-by-step routine that I follow religiously whenever I update drivers or install an SU. You’ll find it in my guide, MSFS Routine Cleanup Steps—a quick and easy process that helps keep your sim running smooth and trouble-free.
So, should you update your GPU drivers?
Absolutely—why not? Especially after a major MSFS update, a fresh GPU driver can help ensure your sim performs at its best. Just be smart about it, and follow a process that works for your setup.
Until next time…
Happy Flying!!!
