Hello Captains and welcome back. A recommended video recently popped up on YouTube which originally was aired on The Today Show. For those not in the USA, The Today Show is a morning news/entertainment show which airs on the NBC network. The subject of the segment is titled “Why a Growing Number of Older Adults Are Playing Video Games”. The video is just a little over 2 minutes and I’ve provided it below if you care to watch it for yourself. After watching the video I went outside and mowed the grass and while riding around on my nice John Deere zero-turn mower I got to thinking. So after a quick shower (it’s hot today in Central Texas) I sat down to write this….
Like many in my Gen X generation (I just turned 59 in early October) the answer as to why we’re gaming is simply because we never stopped. I grew up with video games just about my entire life. First it was the original PONG and soon after that it was the Atari 2600, then along came the Commodore 64 which first introduced me to Flight Simulator and finally along came the Windows PC. While there have been short periods of time when I didn’t have time to game because of family and career commitments, I’ve honestly never stopped. It’s just been a progression from Pong all the way up to where we are today.
While in my younger adult years I played softball, tennis, golf (I was never good at golf) but as I’ve become older just about the only thing I’m doing today is playing pool (billiards), swim and occasionally my wife and I will play Bocce. We also play board games of various types as well as backgammon and I’m learning to play chess. But video games do play an integral part of my day to day life and I believe help keep my mind active.
If you have time, watch the video below and leave me a comment if you’re like me, an older gamer that just never stopped gaming.
Until next time…
Happy Flying!!!
